The clogo

The C logo (I like to call it the 'clo-go') is built from cropped, overlapping blocks, in an 800x800 frame at full size. It is a core piece of the coull.ai platform identity.

Construction

The shape came from when I used to fold strips of scrap paper into a "C" when I was bored. This lead to the overlap and orientation of the blocks: each block meets its neighbour at a 45° diagonal cut, with one always "over" the next — top bar over column, column over bottom bar.

Three blocks form the letter: a top bar, a left column, and a bottom bar. Each block ends in a 45° diagonal cut where it meets its neighbour, so the joints read as folded corners. Each subsequent block gets slightly darker to add a sense of depth.

Palettes

Gold (default)

The default clogo uses a single base gold (#E6BA42), then darkens it with stacked 20%-opacity black overlays — one layer on the left column gives #B89535, and two layers on the bottom bar give #93772A. Note: this is not the same as a single 40% overlay, which would give #8A7028.

The general rule is: pick a base colour, darken once (×0.8 per channel) for the column, darken twice (×0.64) for the bottom bar. Exceptions: sampled palettes like the Monet variant, where the three colours are chosen individually, or special themes — flags or image fills — where the darkening rule does not apply.

Image fills

The blocky nature of the clogo also makes it a good candidate for filling the segments with images instead of flat colour. This is a really good way to highlight pieces of art I find inspiring, which helps fulfil one requirement of this personal website which is to share the parts of art & culture I find myself interested in. Clever use of the clogo means I can sprinkle art throughout the platform in a way that feels natural and fun.
